Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is reportedly on the verge of hiring Luis Enrique as their new head coach, bringing in fresh leadership to build upon their recent Ligue 1 success. Although PSG managed to retain their Ligue 1 title last season, their performance was far from convincing. They encountered several setbacks, losing seven out of 38 matches, and only narrowly secured the championship ahead of Lens.
Well before their inconsistent form became evident towards the end of the campaign, speculations had already circulated about the imminent departure of Christophe Galtier from the managerial position. PSG’s elimination in the Champions League’s round of 16, similar to the previous season, further prompted the club officials to seek a new coach.
Presently, Galtier has not been dismissed by PSG, but it is widely known that his departure is a matter of time, similar to the situation with Mauricio Pochettino almost a year ago.
Initially, former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann seemed poised to take over from Galtier, with discussions held regarding a move to Parc des Princes. However, negotiations failed to yield an agreement, leading to growing speculation in recent weeks that Luis Enrique had emerged as the frontrunner for the role.
According to well-known transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Spaniard is now prepared to sign a two-year contract with PSG, with an official announcement pending the finalization of Galtier’s departure. Galtier still has time remaining on his existing contract, but it is anticipated that the terms will be settled soon.
Enrique’s appointment as PSG’s head coach would mark his return to the managerial scene after leaving his position with the Spanish national team following their exit in the round of 16 during the 2022 World Cup. Over the past couple of months, the 53-year-old had been linked with other clubs like Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, but those teams ultimately pursued different options.
In addition to the coaching change, PSG is on the verge of unveiling several new signings. One notable acquisition is midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who will join from Sporting Lisbon in a £52 million deal. PSG will also bolster their defense with the addition of center-back Milan Skriniar on a free transfer. Furthermore, the French capital club is expected to secure the services of Benfica’s young talent, Cher Ndour.
