According to reports, Dominik Szoboszlai, the RB Leipzig attacker, has successfully completed his medical examinations with Liverpool and has signed a five-year contract with the club. The Hungarian international arrived in the UK via a private jet, after Liverpool triggered his release clause of £60.2 million from Leipzig.
While Newcastle United was also interested in Szoboszlai, they withdrew their interest, giving Liverpool a clear path to secure the deal.
The medical tests for the 22-year-old were scheduled over the weekend and, as reported by The Athletic, they went smoothly without any issues. With the examinations concluded successfully, Szoboszlai has put pen to paper on a five-year contract, committing him to Liverpool until 2028.
Initially, there were uncertainties surrounding the potential deal, but the situation changed during the week, boosting Liverpool’s hopes of acquiring the talented midfielder. It is now expected that the club will officially announce Szoboszlai’s arrival within the next day, making him their second signing of the summer transfer window.
Szoboszlai’s move to Liverpool marks his departure from Leipzig, where he spent two and a half years after joining from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2021. Leipzig will make a significant profit from the sale, having paid €22 million (£18.9 million) for the Hungarian midfielder.
During his time at Leipzig, Szoboszlai showcased his versatility and skills, contributing 20 goals and 22 assists in 91 appearances across various competitions. In the 2022-23 season, he impressively reached double figures in both goals and assists, netting 10 times and providing 13 assists in 46 matches, helping Leipzig secure their second consecutive DFB-Pokal title.
Although primarily deployed on the right side, Szoboszlai has the ability to play as a midfielder or winger for Liverpool. It is anticipated that manager Jurgen Klopp will utilize him as a number eight in the team’s midfield trident. Klopp identified Szoboszlai as an excellent alternative to Mason Mount, who was set to join Manchester United.
Liverpool’s summer activity may not end with Szoboszlai’s signing. The club has already witnessed the departure of several midfield players, including Naby Keita, Leighton Clarkson, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Arthur.
While Fabio Carvalho has left on loan to Leipzig, it is not connected to Szoboszlai’s transfer. Liverpool is rumored to be considering other potential midfield reinforcements, such as Khephren Thuram from Nice and Romeo Lavia from Southampton.
