Inter Milan’s shot-stopper, Andre Onana, seems to have sealed the deal with Manchester United, as he reportedly completed his medical at Old Trafford. The former Ajax star caught the attention of the Red Devils, who were in search of a replacement for the departed David de Gea.
Initially, Man United faced some hurdles in negotiating with Inter, but they eventually reached an agreement. The transfer fee settled upon was £43.8m, with the potential for an extra £3.4m based on performance-related bonuses.
Recently, Onana was spotted at an airport, all set to make the move to Manchester. The 27-year-old goalkeeper has even expressed his excitement about joining the English giants, who have lifted the Premier League trophy a record 20 times.
Sky Sports News reveals that Onana has successfully passed his medical examination with Manchester United, and an official announcement is likely to be made in the coming days.
This transfer marks the end of Onana’s one-year spell with Inter under the guidance of Simone Inzaghi. During his time with the Nerazzurri, he played a crucial role in their journey to the Champions League final, keeping eight clean sheets in the competition, including five in the knockout stages. Unfortunately, Inter fell short in the final against Manchester City.
In addition to his Champions League exploits, Onana helped Inter secure the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana titles. With 19 clean sheets in 41 matches, he demonstrated his prowess not only as a shot-stopper but also as a skilled ball-playing goalkeeper.
Man United has reportedly prepared a five-year contract for Onana, with an option for a sixth year. This makes him their third signing of the summer, joining the ranks of Mason Mount and the returning Jonny Evans.
With Onana’s arrival imminent, there are speculations that Dean Henderson might be moving on to a permanent transfer, with Nottingham Forest rumored to be interested. However, for now, Henderson is accompanying his teammates on their pre-season tour in the United States.
Once the deal with Onana is finalized, Man United is expected to intensify their efforts in acquiring a new striker. Talks are underway with Atalanta BC over the potential signing of Rasmus Hojlund. The Danish international has reportedly agreed to personal terms with the club and, with Ten Hag’s side looking to fend off interest from Paris Saint-Germain, they are preparing a formal proposal for Atalanta.
The Italian club is said to be demanding a hefty fee of £86m for Hojlund’s departure, but Man United will likely try to negotiate a more reasonable price.
As for Manchester United, they recently secured a 1-0 victory over Lyon in a pre-season friendly in Edinburgh and are gearing up to face Arsenal in New Jersey on Saturday.
