West Ham United’s pursuit of Manchester United’s Scott McTominay seems to have hit a stumbling block as the Red Devils set a hefty price tag on the Scottish midfielder.
Reports suggest that West Ham is now exploring other options to fill the void left by Declan Rice, following their inability to match McTominay’s valuation.
McTominay, who made 39 appearances for Manchester United last season, has been in sensational form while representing Scotland in 2023.
His five goals in four Euro 2024 qualifiers have propelled Scotland to the top of their group, with only Romelu Lukaku and Manchester United target Rasmus Hojlund outscoring him.
The Mirror claims that Manchester United is demanding no less than £40 million for McTominay this summer, making it a costly deal for West Ham.
Manchester United’ recent signing of Mason Mount and strong links to Sofyan Amrabat could potentially limit McTominay’s game time, leading him to express his desire for more prominent involvement in the first team.
In light of this situation, West Ham’s pursuit of McTominay remains uncertain, as they are hesitant to meet the player’s current valuation.
However, there is a potential alternative on their radar – James Ward-Prowse. The Southampton captain may be seeking a move away from his boyhood club after their relegation.
The Daily Mail reports that West Ham has already tabled a £25 million bid for Ward-Prowse, hoping to negotiate a lower fee with Southampton, who is seeking £40 million for their skipper.
Southampton’s relegation to the Championship could weaken their bargaining position, especially with other clubs expressing interest in midfielder Romeo Lavia.
Ward-Prowse, known for his set-piece prowess, impressed with 11 goals in all competitions despite Southampton’s disappointing season.
With West Ham likely to receive a substantial sum of £105 million for Declan Rice’s potential move to Arsenal, any player they pursue as a direct replacement may come at a premium.
Another player recently linked to West Ham is Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher. The Hammers’ £40 million bid for Gallagher was reportedly turned down earlier this week.
Despite a challenging first full season at Chelsea, David Moyes remains hopeful that Gallagher can replicate the form he showed during his loan spell at Crystal Palace.
