West Ham United has made a significant addition to their squad with the acquisition of midfielder Edson Alvarez from Ajax.
The 25-year-old Mexican has signed a five-year contract that will keep him at the London Stadium until June 2028. The transfer fee remains undisclosed but is believed to be approximately £35 million.
Alvarez, who played a crucial role in Ajax’s recent success, will wear the No.19 shirt for the Europa Conference League winners. This signing marks David Moyes’s first move in the summer transfer window and is expected to strengthen West Ham’s midfield options.
Delighted about his arrival at the club, Alvarez expressed his happiness and pride, stating, “Being here in London and seeing London Stadium, it’s amazing. I can’t wait to play here in front of the West Ham fans.
He emphasized the sentimental value of joining a club like West Ham, calling it a dream for both him and his family.
Having learned English during his time at Ajax, Alvarez is confident that his style of play will suit the Premier League. He acknowledged the league’s status as the best in the world and expressed his commitment to giving his all for West Ham and their passionate supporters.
David Moyes shared his excitement about the signing, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the midfield. He praised Alvarez’s international experience and success at previous clubs, highlighting his potential contributions in both English and European competitions.
Edson Alvarez began his professional career with Club America before moving to Ajax in 2019. The versatile midfielder, known for his deep-lying play and ability to play at centre-back, made 147 appearances for Ajax, scoring 13 goals. He also won two Eredivisie titles and one KNVB Beker during his time with the Dutch club.
While there was strong interest from Chelsea in January, West Ham managed to secure Alvarez’s signature. The Mexican international, capped 69 times for his country, is expected to make his Premier League debut against Bournemouth on Saturday.
In addition to signing Alvarez, West Ham is actively pursuing other targets to strengthen their squad. James Ward-Prowse’s medical examination is scheduled for Thursday, ahead of his potential £30 million transfer from Southampton.
The club has also agreed in principle to sign Manchester United center-back Harry Maguire, while Scott McTominay is among several other players on Moyes’s radar.
