Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been urged to leave the club by manager Erik ten Hag if he is not willing to fight for his place in the team. This comes amidst rumors that Maguire is close to finalizing a transfer to West Ham United.
Ten Hag recently stripped Maguire of the captaincy following a season where the 30-year-old started only eight Premier League matches. Instead, central defense positions were often occupied by Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, and Victor Lindelof.
Recent reports from British media indicate that West Ham United has agreed to a deal worth £30 million ($38.01 million) for Maguire. The English international became the most expensive defender in the world when he joined Manchester United from Leicester City for a staggering £80 million back in 2019.
Speaking to reporters, manager Erik ten Hag expressed his opinion on Maguire’s situation. “He must be willing to fight for his place and showcase his abilities as a top-class center back,” said ten Hag.
“He has proven to be the best choice for England, and I believe he can do the same for us. But he needs to demonstrate it on the field.”
The Manchester United manager further emphasized that if Maguire lacks the confidence to compete and fight for his position, it would be best for him to make a decision regarding his future.
However, ten Hag did mention that he is content with Maguire’s presence at the club, highlighting the importance of having high-level players who can make an impact even when not starting.
In their Premier League opener, Manchester United will face Wolverhampton Wanderers later today. The outcome of this match may shed further light on Maguire’s situation and potential future with the club.
