Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has recently expressed his frustrations regarding professional football players opting to leave Europe for Saudi Arabia during this summer transfer window.
Kroos, who himself rejected a potential move to the Middle East earlier this year, sparked controversy with his comment on 21-year-old Spain youth international Gabri Veiga’s transfer from Celta Vigo to Al Ahli.
Despite receiving interest from various clubs across Europe and reportedly being close to joining Napoli, Veiga surprisingly accepted an offer from Al Ahli. This decision prompted Kroos to publicly label the move as “embarrassing.”
Kroos, while acknowledging that concerns over Saudi Arabia’s human rights record played a role in his decision to reject such a move, emphasized that the level of football available in the Middle East should be a major concern for players who have made the switch.
He stated, “Each player has to make this decision for themselves, just like Cristiano Ronaldo, who made a similar choice towards the end of his career. However, it becomes extremely challenging when players in the prime of their careers, possessing the talent to play for top European clubs, decide to pursue such changes.”
Kroos further criticized the perception that ambitious football is played in Saudi Arabia, asserting that financial motives tend to dominate such decisions, ultimately diminishing the integrity of the sport.
He expressed concerns about the potential impact on the football we all know and love.
As he enters his tenth season at Real Madrid, the 33-year-old midfielder acknowledged the significance of this milestone.
He emphasized that playing for such a prestigious club requires continuous adherence to the highest standards and consistent performance.
Kroos believes that a poor two-year spell at Real Madrid can jeopardize a player’s career. Ten years at Real Madrid is an accomplishment that fills him with pride.
Kroos also revealed his contentment with life in Madrid, emphasizing his family’s comfort in the country and their adaptation to the local weather.
He shared that over the years, they have increasingly considered Madrid as their long-term home, even after his playing career concludes.
