AC Milan is set to clash against Atalanta BC in the Coppa Italia quarter-final at San Siro in what promises to be an exciting encounter.
The home team, Milan, has been in good form lately but faces historical struggles in this tournament, while Atalanta aims for their first Coppa Italia title in 61 years.
Milan started the new year with a 4-1 win against Cagliari in the last 16 of the Coppa Italia, followed by a 3-0 victory over Empoli in Serie A. Their strong start in 2024 places them third in Serie A, narrowing the gap to the top.
Despite their domestic and European stature, Milan surprisingly hasn’t been dominant in the Coppa Italia, having won the title only in 2003. However, they have recently defeated Atalanta in back-to-back games at San Siro.
Atalanta, on the other hand, enters this fixture after a 1-1 draw against Roma, sitting sixth in Serie A. Their away form has been less consistent, having won only one of their last six games.
Both sides have faced defeats in recent Coppa Italia finals, but Atalanta hasn’t progressed beyond the quarter-finals in the last two seasons.
Milan will miss Samu Chukwueze and Ismael Bennacer due to AFCON commitments. Defensive injuries have left them with limited options, relying on Simon Kjaer and Jan-Carlo Simic at centre-back.
Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman is also away at AFCON, allowing Aleksei Miranchuk more game time. They might see Muriel and Scamacca start in attack.
Injuries sideline Hans Hateboer, Rafael Toloi, and El Bilal Toure for Atalanta.
AC Milan: (4-3-3)
Calabria, Kjaer, Hernandez, Florenzi;
Reijnders, Adli, Loftus-Cheek;
Pulisic, Jovic, Traore
Atalanta BC: (3-5-2)
Scalvini, Djimsiti, Kolasinac;
Zappacosta, De Roon, Pasalic, Koopmeiners, Ruggeri;
Prediction: AC Milan 2-1 Atalanta BC
Milan’s strong home form could give them the edge in what might be an open and competitive match. Despite Atalanta’s ability to score, overcoming Milan at San Siro remains a challenging task.
