Manchester United forward Adriana Leon ignited Canada’s Women’s World Cup campaign on Wednesday with a decisive goal, leading her team to a 2-1 victory that dashed Ireland’s hopes in the tournament.
After a goalless draw against Nigeria, the pressure was on the Olympic champions to deliver in their match in Perth, and they did just that, overcoming a tough start.
The game began with a shock for Canada when Arsenal midfielder Katie McCabe scored directly from a corner in the fourth minute.
The 17,065 fans, many of whom were passionately supporting Ireland despite the rain, erupted with joy. However, Canada fought back, with Megan Connolly’s unfortunate own goal just before half-time leveling the playing field.
In the 53rd minute, Adriana Leon stepped up with a superb goal, clinching the victory for Canada and ending Ireland’s chances of progressing in their World Cup debut.
With this win, Canada moved to the top of Group B with four points, putting them ahead of Australia ahead of their crucial match against Nigeria in Brisbane.
Canada received a significant boost with Chelsea midfielder Jessie Fleming’s return from a calf injury. She even took on the captain’s armband, replacing Christine Sinclair, who started the game on the bench. Evelyne Viens, who made a strong impact as a substitute against Nigeria, was preferred in the attack.
Ireland faced a setback before the match even began, as Florida State forward Heather Payne suffered a hamstring injury during the warm-up and was replaced by Aine O’Gorman.
In the early stages, an aggressive Ireland ran Canada ragged with their spirited play. In the third minute, goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan was forced into action as a cross from Lucy Quinn almost found Kyra Carusa’s head.
However, it was McCabe’s left-foot in-swinger from the subsequent corner that found the net, leaving Sheridan helpless.
Canada tried to regain control by playing a possession-based game but struggled to break through Ireland’s gritty defense, led by Louise Quinn, who showed remarkable determination despite overcoming a foot injury from the previous match.
It was only in the half-hour mark that Canada had a clear opportunity to score, but Vanessa Gilles failed to convert from close range after a clever flick from Kadeisha Buchanan.
Just before the first half ended, Canada’s persistence paid off when Julia Grosso’s cross deflected off Connolly for an own goal, leveling the score.
In the second half, Canada’s coach Bev Priestman made three changes, including bringing on Christine Sinclair. The move worked in Canada’s favor, as they played with more intent and continuously threatened the Irish goal.
The decisive moment came when Sophie Schmidt’s precise through ball found Adriana Leon, who made no mistake and fired past goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan, securing the win for Canada.
