David Silva, the iconic Spanish midfielder, has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 37.
This decision comes as a result of a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained during pre-season training with La Liga club Real Sociedad.
Silva’s retirement marks the end of a remarkable career that spanned over 19 years. He returned to his home country in 2020 after spending a highly successful decade at the Etihad Stadium, where he established himself as one of the greatest playmakers in Premier League history, proudly donning the sky blue jersey of Manchester City.
During his ten-year tenure with Manchester City, Silva made 436 appearances across all competitions, contributing an impressive 77 goals and 141 assists. His creative genius and vision on the field resulted in 93 Premier League assists, ranking him seventh in the division’s history.
Silva’s exceptional performances were vital in securing four Premier League titles, five EFL Cups, two FA Cups, and two Community Shields for the Citizens.
Before his time at Manchester City, Silva began his career with Valencia, where he emerged from the club’s esteemed youth academy. His six-year spell at Valencia saw him amass 168 appearances, during which he recorded 32 goals and 36 assists, including a notable Copa del Rey triumph in 2008. Silva also had loan spells at Eibar and Celta Vigo.
Silva’s international career was equally illustrious. Representing Spain, he earned 125 caps and played a crucial role in winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championships in 2008 and 2012.

Silva departs Real Sociedad after a productive season, making 34 appearances and contributing three goals and seven assists. His departure coincides with Real Sociedad securing fourth place in La Liga, guaranteeing qualification for the prestigious UEFA Champions League in the upcoming 2023-24 season.
