In an announcement by Inter Milan CEO Giuseppe Marotta, it has been confirmed that Man United has shown interest in signing goalkeeper Andre Onana during the current summer transfer window. This news comes as David de Gea’s contract with Manchester United has expired, making him a free agent. However, negotiations are still ongoing between De Gea and the Red Devils regarding a potential new contract.
Reports suggest that Onana is a top priority for Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag, who previously worked with the Cameroonian goalkeeper during their time at Ajax. Onana joined Inter Milan from Ajax last year and had an impressive season, helping his team reach the Champions League final while also securing the Italian Super Cup and Coppa Italia titles. Throughout the recent campaign, Onana made 41 appearances for Inter Milan, recording an impressive 19 clean sheets.
Recent rumors indicated that Inter Milan sporting director Piero Ausilio traveled to England to hold discussions with Manchester United regarding a possible deal for Onana. Marotta has now confirmed the Red Devils’ interest and mentioned that both Inter Milan and the player will carefully assess any official offer that may be submitted by the English club.
According to journalist Alfredo Pedulla, Manchester United is willing to offer around £38.5 million plus bonuses for Onana, while Inter Milan is looking for a base fee of £43 million with additional add-ons.
Throughout his career, Onana has enjoyed success, winning three Eredivisie titles and two KNVB Cups during his time at Ajax. He has already added two trophies to his collection with Inter Milan during the 2022-23 season.
While Manchester United has also been linked with other goalkeepers such as Jordan Pickford from Everton and David Raya from Brentford, Onana has emerged as their primary target for the goalkeeper position. Currently, Tom Heaton and Dean Henderson are the only senior goalkeepers at Old Trafford, but it is expected that Henderson will make a permanent move to Nottingham Forest.
Should Onana join Manchester United, it is unlikely that De Gea will be re-signed, as the Spanish goalkeeper is not keen on accepting a backup role at this stage of his career.
In addition to the pursuit of Onana, Manchester United is also on the verge of securing the signing of Mason Mount from Chelsea. The talented attacker is scheduled to undergo a medical examination with Ten Hag’s team on Monday.
