Manchester United are in advanced negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain over the transfer of midfielder Manuel Ugarte, with the player already agreeing personal terms with the Red Devils.
Ugarte, a 23-year-old Uruguayan international, has emerged as a key target for United manager Erik ten Hag as he looks to bolster his midfield options ahead of the new season.
The defensive midfielder impressed last season on loan at Sporting CP, making 47 appearances across all competitions and helping the Portuguese side reach the UEFA Champions League group stage.
United have already agreed personal terms with Ugarte, who has made it clear to PSG that Old Trafford is his preferred destination.
However, the two clubs are yet to settle on a transfer fee, with PSG reportedly holding out for around €70 million (£59m).
The negotiations are being facilitated by Ugarte’s agent, Jorge Mendes, who is working hard to find a resolution between the clubs.
United are hopeful of reaching an agreement in the coming days, with Ugarte set to become their third signing of the summer transfer window following the arrivals of Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro.
Ten Hag is keen to add depth and quality to his midfield options, with Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Scott McTominay, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka all potentially available for transfer if United’s valuation is met.
The signing of Ugarte would provide a strong defensive presence in front of the back four, allowing the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Frenkie de Jong (should he join from Barcelona) to operate in more advanced positions.
With negotiations ongoing, United fans will be hoping that a deal for Ugarte can be concluded swiftly, as the club looks to mount a challenge for the Premier League title and a return to the Champions League next season.
