Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag expressed his belief that he will not lose his position at Old Trafford, despite the team’s tumultuous start to the 2023-24 season.
The Red Devils have suffered six defeats in their first ten matches across all competitions, including disappointing results in the Champions League group stage.
During Tuesday evening’s clash with Galatasaray, Manchester United initially held a 2-1 lead before succumbing to a 3-2 loss.
Goalkeeper Andre Onana’s performance once again raised concerns among critics.
When questioned about his future following the defeat, ten Hag stressed the significance of standing united during this challenging phase.
Quoting the Manchester Evening News, ten Hag stated,
“Last season was brilliant and more than we could have expected. However, we knew there would be hurdles in this project, and currently, we find ourselves in a difficult period, evident to all. Nevertheless, we will emerge together, fighting with determination and unity – the coaching staff, the directors, and the entire team.”
He added,
“We must not make excuses. Perhaps there is a slight imbalance on the left side, but the errors we are making are unacceptable. We must improve and secure victories. Although we repeat certain mistakes, I saw a connected team with tremendous spirit, playing exceptionally well at times, scoring impressive goals, and dominating the game.”
“But suddenly, a mistake occurs, as football is a game of errors. It is my responsibility to provide coaching and instructions on handling such situations. However, we were punished for our mistakes, which is clear.”
Despite an outstanding display by Rasmus Hojlund, who netted two goals on Tuesday night against Galatasaray, Manchester United failed to earn any points.
Hojlund’s goals momentarily gave United a 2-1 lead in the 67th minute. However, Kerem Akturkoglu equalized just four minutes later, followed by Mauro Icardi securing victory for Galatasaray in the 81st minute, shortly after missing a penalty.
Looking ahead, Manchester United will redirect their focus to the Premier League as they prepare to face Brentford at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
The 20-time English champions find themselves with their worst start to a league campaign in 34 years, having suffered four defeats in their first seven matches.
Since assuming the role last summer, Erik ten Hag has overseen 72 games at the helm of Manchester United, achieving 45 wins, nine draws, and 19 losses.
