In a recent development, Manchester United has reportedly rejected an offer from Borussia Dortmund to reacquire Jadon Sancho on loan for the upcoming 2023-24 season. Sancho, an English international, was highly sought after in the transfer market in 2020 and 2021, showcasing his talent with 114 goal contributions in 137 games for Dortmund.
After intense competition from various European clubs, Manchester United secured Sancho’s services in a deal worth €85 million (£73.1 million). However, the player has faced difficulties adapting to his return to England. In his 79 appearances for the Red Devils, Sancho has managed only 12 goals and six assists. Additionally, he experienced a period of absence due to a combination of physical and mental challenges.
Despite these setbacks, Sancho featured in 41 matches across all competitions under manager Erik ten Hag, including 21 Premier League starts. His contributions were pivotal as Manchester United secured a third-place finish and a spot in the coveted Champions League. Nevertheless, the prolific form he displayed in Germany has yet to be replicated in the Premier League, leading Manchester United to consider selling Sancho if the right offer arises this summer.
Currently under contract with the Red Devils until 2026, with the option of an additional 12 months, Manchester United holds a strong position in negotiations and can demand a substantial fee for Sancho’s departure. According to the Daily Star, Borussia Dortmund recently approached Manchester United with a proposal for a loan deal involving Sancho. However, the English champions swiftly turned down the German club’s offer.
While Sancho operated primarily on the left side of Manchester United’s attack last season, his role may change if the club acquires a new number nine. Marcus Rashford, who often played as a forward, is likely to return to his preferred wide position if such a signing occurs. Additionally, Alejandro Garnacho has become an integral part of ten Hag’s setup, and Antony, who previously worked with the Dutch manager at Ajax, is the club’s preferred option on the right flank.
Although Tottenham Hotspur was previously linked with a potential move for Sancho, they recently secured James Maddison from Leicester City for £40 million instead. Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion have emerged as interested parties, both of whom can offer European football to Sancho for the upcoming season.
While Dortmund’s attempt to bring Sancho back to the Westfalenstadion proved unsuccessful, they have reportedly shown renewed interest in Anthony Elanga, another Manchester United attacker. Additionally, there have been suggestions of a possible move for Hannibal Mejbri, although the Tunisian talent will have an opportunity to impress ten Hag during pre-season after a successful loan spell at Birmingham City.
