Manchester United is said to be exploring the possibility of including Aaron Wan-Bissaka in a proposal to secure the services of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ defender, Nelson Semedo.
The right-back recently signed a two-year contract extension with Wolves, tying him down until 2025.
However, this extension was agreed upon during Julen Lopetegui’s tenure as head coach, who has since departed from the club.
It has become evident that Wolves are now under pressure to take drastic measures to strengthen their financial position, mainly due to FFP requirements.
Semedo showcased his talent during his team’s opening fixture against Manchester United, despite suffering a 1-0 defeat. Nevertheless, it is believed that Semedo is one of the highest earners, if not the top earner, at Wolves.
Reports emerged earlier this week suggesting that United manager Erik ten Hag expressed interest in signing the Portuguese international before the summer transfer window closes.
Despite already having options in Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, each with their own unique qualities, Ten Hag seems keen on adding Semedo to his squad.
Football Insider reveals that Ten Hag would be willing to allow Wan-Bissaka to join Wolves as part of the deal to secure Semedo’s services.
Wan-Bissaka had limited game time in the first half of the 2022-23 season but impressed Ten Hag after the World Cup, earning him a total of 34 appearances across various competitions.
The 25-year-old right-back has also featured in United’s opening two Premier League matches this season, contributing to Raphael Varane’s winning goal against Wolves on August 14 with an assist.
However, due to financial constraints imposed by FFP, Manchester United cannot afford to splurge on a new right-back as they still aim to reinforce their central midfield.
With less than a year remaining on Wan-Bissaka’s contract, it would be advantageous for United to capitalize on his potential sale to offset any expenses involved in acquiring Semedo.
The terms of the potential deal remain uncertain, including whether Wolves would demand an additional fee or if Wan-Bissaka himself is interested in joining Gary O’Neil’s team.
Wolves currently have Matt Doherty as their other established right-back, with Jonny potentially being allowed to leave before the upcoming September 1 transfer deadline.
