Manchester United’s midfield talisman, Mason Mount, will be absent from the team’s upcoming fixtures after sustaining an injury during the clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
This setback means that Mount will miss the next two home matches until after the international break in September.
According to a statement released on the club’s official website, Mount’s injury is described as a “slight complaint” that was picked up over the weekend.
The talented midfielder, who recently joined the Red Devils in a £65m transfer from Chelsea, has started both Premier League games this season in a deeper role alongside Casemiro.
Despite his promising performances, Mount has faced criticism as Manchester United has encountered challenges in the early stages of the campaign.
In their first league match against Wolverhampton Wanderers, the team narrowly secured a 1-0 victory, benefiting from a contentious penalty decision.
However, luck was not on their side in North London, as they suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Spurs.
With Mount sidelined, the spotlight now falls on the potential replacement. Christian Eriksen emerges as the most likely candidate to step into the midfield void, unless Manchester United swiftly secures a new signing before the upcoming weekend fixtures. Manager Erik ten Hag is believed to prioritize strengthening the midfield as a top priority in the transfer market.
Mount’s injury also results in another setback for his international career. The 24-year-old midfielder is set to miss his third consecutive England camp due to injury.
Since his last appearance in the World Cup quarter-final against France in December, Mount has been absent from the national squad for both the March and June international breaks.
Meanwhile, England has excelled in their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, winning all four matches and firmly leading their group.
Gareth Southgate, England’s manager, will soon announce the squad for the forthcoming matches against Ukraine and Scotland, with the latter being a friendly encounter at Hampden Park.
Unfortunately for Mount, he won’t have the opportunity to represent his country once again due to his ongoing recovery.
