According to reports, it seems highly unlikely that Manchester United will bring Wout Weghorst or Marcel Sabitzer back to the club on a permanent basis during the upcoming summer transfer window. These players were initially signed on loan in January as a response to Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure and Christian Eriksen’s injury.
Weghorst, who joined from Burnley, made 31 appearances for the Red Devils but struggled to find the back of the net, managing only two goals and three assists. He is now gearing up for pre-season training with Burnley, who have been newly promoted to the Premier League.
On the other hand, Sabitzer had a promising season, scoring three goals and providing one assist in his 18 appearances for Manchester United. Unfortunately, his campaign was cut short due to a knee injury. Nonetheless, it appears that both Weghorst and Sabitzer will not be returning to the club for the upcoming 2023-24 season.
Manchester United released a statement on their official website clarifying the situation. The club acknowledged the contributions made by the loaned players, highlighting Weghorst’s assist in the Carabao Cup final and Sabitzer’s goals in the Europa League and FA Cup matches. However, the statement confirmed that Weghorst would be returning to Burnley, while Sabitzer would go back to Bayern Munich.
While the Manchester Evening News suggests that the door is not completely closed on their return, it is considered unlikely at this stage. Manchester United is currently focused on securing a new striker, and Weghorst’s struggles in front of goal during the latter half of the season make a potential deal unlikely.
Sabitzer’s future, however, remains uncertain, as Barcelona has reportedly been offered the opportunity to sign him from Bayern Munich in the current transfer window. Although Mason Mount’s £60 million transfer from Chelsea to Manchester United is imminent, there could be potential midfield departures, with Fred, Scott McTominay, and Donny van de Beek being linked with moves away from the club.
Erik ten Hag, the head coach of Manchester United, has reportedly been satisfied with Sabitzer’s performance during his loan spell, which leaves a slight possibility for the player’s return. The Red Devils will soon kick off their pre-season training to prepare for the upcoming Premier League campaign, which starts with a match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 14th.
