Neymar Jr. has been recalled to the national team for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina.
This marks the end of a 17-month absence for the 33-year-old forward, who last played for Brazil in October 2023 before suffering a knee injury.
Neymar’s return comes after a successful stint at his boyhood club, Santos, where he registered three goals and three assists in seven appearances.
Brazil’s head coach, Dorival Junior, expressed optimism about Neymar’s return, stating, “We were waiting for him to return; this is the first opportunity that we could have him since recovering from injury. I hope he is very happy when he returns. Let’s give him the confidence to develop to the best of his ability”.
Joining Neymar in the squad is Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr., who has been a consistent performer for both club and country. Vinicius’ inclusion is seen as a boost for Brazil’s attacking options as they aim to improve their standing in the CONMEBOL qualifiers, where they currently sit fifth.
However, the squad announcement also brought some surprises. Antony, who has been in impressive form for Real Betis on loan from Manchester United, was left out of the squad.
Despite his recent performances, Dorival Junior opted for other attacking options, including Neymar, Vinicius Jr., and Raphinha.
Brazil will face Colombia on March 20 and Argentina on March 25 in crucial matches that could determine their World Cup qualification hopes. With Neymar back in the fold, the Seleção will be looking to make a strong statement and secure vital points in their quest for World Cup glory.
