Manchester United’s star forward, Marcus Rashford, has expressed his interest in donning the captain’s armband for the club in the future.
Although he admits he doesn’t actively think about it, the 25-year-old is keen to embrace the responsibility when the opportunity arises.
Rashford’s comments come in the wake of Bruno Fernandes‘ appointment as the new skipper, replacing Harry Maguire.
Maguire had the armband taken away from him due to struggles during the 2022-23 campaign. Fernandes’ leadership qualities have earned him the prestigious role within the team.
In a recent interview with The Overlap, Rashford paid tribute to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, describing him as the best personality he has ever encountered at the club.
He praised the Swedish striker’s authenticity and consistency in how he interacts with both players and fans, making him a true role model for the younger generation.
The England international emphasized the significance of taking responsibility at a club like Manchester United, regardless of age.
He believes that every player, young or experienced, needs to step up to the occasion and showcase their skills to prove why they are part of the renowned Red Devils squad.
Despite expressing his interest in the captaincy, Rashford is currently focused on his performances on the pitch. He made his first appearance of the summer in a friendly against Arsenal, helping his team secure a 2-0 victory over the Premier League rivals.
Man United’s pre-season preparations also saw them face League Two team Wrexham in San Diego, resulting in a 3-1 win for the Welsh outfit.
The senior side will continue their tour with matches against Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund before heading back to Europe for friendlies against Lens and Athletic Bilbao.
The 2022-23 season proved to be exceptional for Rashford, with 30 goals and 11 assists in 56 appearances across all competitions. His impressive performances earned him a new contract, extending his stay at Old Trafford until June 2028.
