Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana has affirmed that he is on the brink of sealing a transfer to Manchester United from Inter Milan, as he prepares to undergo a medical examination with the Red Devils on Wednesday.
On Tuesday evening, the 27-year-old embarked on a flight from Milan to England, edging closer to finalizing his move to the illustrious 20-time English champions.
It is anticipated that Onana’s agreement will be formally announced prior to the club’s pre-season tour in the United States, enabling him to potentially make his debut against Arsenal in New Jersey this Saturday.
Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Cameroon international expressed his dedication to honesty and his penchant for fresh challenges. He explained, “What matters is to always be truthful. I’m an individual who constantly seeks new opportunities. Playing in the Premier League and representing a club of United’s caliber is simply irresistible. All parties involved desired this outcome. However, it’s crucial to note that I would have been equally content if I had remained at Inter. I’ve had no issues there. In fact, something magical was born in Milan that is almost indescribable.”
Onana expressed his gratitude, stating, “The word ‘thank you’ is what I want to convey. I extend my appreciation to all the staff at Pinetina and the entire organization, the executives, the president, the coach, and my teammates. But most importantly, to the fans. I genuinely felt their love. Although I spent only one year in Milan, I will forever be an Interista. Now, I’ll be cheering for them in front of the TV. I wish Inter the immediate success of clinching the Scudetto that eluded us.”
Reflecting on Inter’s encounter with Manchester City in the Champions League final, Onana asserted that the Italian giants deserved to lift the prestigious trophy. He stated, “We were on the verge of touching it; we deserved it. We confronted City head-on, with only minor details separating us, but that’s football. Personally, I aspire to win the Champions League with United, while also hoping that Inter will reach another final and emerge victorious.”
Onana also conveyed his admiration for the fervent supporters, saying, “Every fan deserves it, both those who journeyed to Istanbul, transforming the atmosphere into a home-like ambience, and those who continue to show unwavering support from afar. Being selected to continue this tradition fills me with pride and responsibility. I am determined to secure silverware alongside my new teammates.”
The talented goalkeeper is set to assume the role of Manchester United’s primary shot-stopper, taking over from David de Gea, who departed the club on a free transfer this summer.
Sources suggest that the former Ajax goalkeeper is on the verge of signing a five-year contract with the 20-time English champions. An official announcement from both clubs is expected within the next 24 hours, formally confirming Onana’s move.
