Newcastle United has secured the services of midfielder Bruno Guimaraes for an extended period, as the 25-year-old has agreed to a new five-year contract with the club.
Since his arrival in January 2022 from Lyon for a fee of approximately £40m, Guimaraes has become an integral part of the Magpies’ first-team squad under the management of Eddie Howe.
Last season, Guimaraes showcased his skills by contributing four goals and five assists in 32 Premier League appearances, playing a crucial role in helping the club achieve a top-four finish and secure qualification for the prestigious Champions League tournament.
Despite having three years remaining on his current deal at St James’ Park, Newcastle is determined to acknowledge Guimaraes’ significant impact and ward off potential interest from other clubs seeking to acquire the talented midfielder.
During the summer transfer window, both Chelsea and Manchester City made inquiries regarding Guimaraes, while Liverpool reportedly failed with a substantial £100m offer.
Additionally, Spanish powerhouses Real Madrid and Barcelona have been linked with an interest in Newcastle’s No.39.
However, it appears that Guimaraes has no immediate intentions of seeking new opportunities elsewhere.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Guimaraes has agreed to extend his contract until the summer of 2028.
The new deal will incorporate a release clause estimated to be worth around £100m.
In a previous interview with ChronicleLive in July, Guimaraes expressed his desire to remain at Newcastle and commit his future to the club. He stated,
“I want to stay…but the doubt is ongoing. So, let’s see.”
Magpies manager Eddie Howe has also emphasized Guimaraes’ contentment at the club, describing him as feeling “at home” in the North East.
Howe believes that Guimaraes views this season as a tremendous opportunity to showcase his abilities on the grandest stage while contributing to the growth of Newcastle as a football club.
The manager acknowledges that interest from other clubs is always a possibility but trusts that Guimaraes is fully committed to Newcastle.
Guimaraes is expected to feature in Newcastle’s upcoming Premier League match against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Sunday.
