Celta Vigo vs. Girona La Liga – preview, prediction, team news, lineups

La Liga leaders Girona will look to recover from a disappointing defeat in the Copa del Rey as they resume their league campaign against Celta Vigo on Sunday.

Girona, who are having an impressive season, currently sit at the top of the division, one point ahead of second-placed Real Madrid. On the other hand, Celta Vigo is in 16th place, with only a two-point cushion above the relegation zone.

Match preview

Celta Vigo enters this match on the back of consecutive losses to Real Sociedad. They were defeated 1-0 by the Basque side in La Liga last weekend and suffered a 2-1 loss in the Copa del Rey on Tuesday.

Despite these setbacks, Rafael Benitez’s side has managed to pick up four points from their last three league matches, with victories over Real Betis and draws against Mallorca.

However, they were unable to continue their momentum as they fell to Real Sociedad last weekend.

During the 2023-24 campaign, Celta Vigo has struggled to maintain consistency, with three wins, eight draws, and ten losses from 21 league matches. This puts them in 16th position with 17 points.

Celta’s home form has been particularly disappointing this season, as they have only managed to earn 10 points from 11 games in front of their own fans, scoring only eight goals.

While Celta has won two of their last four La Liga matches against Girona, they experienced a 1-0 defeat in their previous encounter earlier this season.

Girona continued their remarkable La Liga campaign with a convincing 5-1 victory over Sevilla last weekend. This result brought their total points to 52 from 21 matches, with a record of 16 wins, four defeats, and one loss.

The Catalan outfit currently sits at the top of the division, leading second-placed Real Madrid by one point. However, Carlo Ancelotti’s side still has a game in hand, and they have the opportunity to claim the top spot on Saturday with either a draw or a victory against Las Palmas.

Girona has been the most formidable attacking side in Spain’s top flight this season, scoring 51 goals in their 21 matches.

They are in an excellent position to secure a top-four finish, as they currently sit 11 points clear of fifth-placed Athletic Bilbao.

With 24 points from their 10 away matches, Girona boasts the best away record in La Liga this season, with seven wins and three defeats.

However, Girona will enter this match after suffering a quarter-final exit in the Copa del Rey, as they lost 3-2 to Mallorca on Wednesday.

Team News

Celta Vigo will be missing Joseph Aidoo and Franco Cervi due to injury, while Jonathan Bamba is still representing Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Head coach Rafael Benitez made changes to the lineup for the Copa del Rey match on Tuesday, but players like Iago Aspas, Oscar Mingueza, Unai Nunez, and Carlos Dotor will return for this match.

Jorgen Strand Larsen, who has been in good scoring form this season with seven goals in La Liga, will also make his comeback.

As for Girona, Eric Garcia, Juanpe, David Lopez, Joel Roca, and Toni Villa are unavailable due to injury.

Antal Yaakobishvili could feature in the defense, given the team’s injury concerns in that area of the field. There will likely be several changes from the starting lineup that featured in the Copa del Rey.

One notable addition will be Artem Dovbyk, Girona’s center-forward, who has had an excellent debut season in La Liga, scoring 14 goals and providing six assists in 20 appearances.

Celta Vigo possible starting lineup:

Guaita;

Mingueza, U Nunez, Dominguez, M Sanchez;

Rodriguez, Tapia, Dotor, De la Torre;

Aspas, Larsen

Girona possible starting lineup:

Gazzaniga;

Couto, Yaakobishvili, Blind, Gutierrez;

Tsyhankov, A Garcia, Martin, Herrera, Savio;

Dovbyk

Prediction: Celta Vigo 1-2 Girona

Girona has been in exceptional form in La Liga this season, making it difficult to bet against them, especially given their strong away record and Celta Vigo’s struggles at home. While the scoreline may be tight, Girona should have enough quality to secure all three points.
