In what seems to be an intense race to secure the signature of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, Chelsea appears to have taken the lead, leaving Arsenal behind in the competition.
Osimhen, who had a remarkable 2022-23 season with Napoli, scoring 26 goals in 32 league games, played a crucial role in guiding the club to their first Serie A title in 33 years.
Unfortunately, Napoli has struggled to replicate their success this season and currently finds themselves in ninth place in the Serie A table.
Despite the team’s underwhelming performance, Osimhen committed to a new contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2026.
However, speculations about Osimhen’s future persist due to a reported €120m (£102.7m) release clause in his contract. The Nigerian international has hinted at a potential summer move, suggesting that he is seeking a new challenge.
Both Chelsea and Arsenal have emerged as potential destinations for the talented striker. However, according to reports from Il Mattino, it seems that Chelsea is currently leading the race to secure Osimhen’s services.
Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis has made it clear that the club will only consider parting ways with Osimhen if his release clause is activated.
While Chelsea is open to strengthening their attacking options in the January transfer window, they may choose to wait until the summer to pursue a deal for Osimhen.
The Blues are eager to bolster their frontline, as Nicolas Jackson’s performance since joining the club has been less impressive than expected. Despite scoring seven goals in 19 Premier League matches, the Senegalese forward has struggled to find consistency in front of goal.
