In a groundbreaking transfer deal, England captain Harry Kane has made a surprising move from Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur to join Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.
The German powerhouse confirmed the signing on Saturday, revealing that Kane has signed a four-year contract until 2027. This prestigious transfer comes after extensive negotiations between the two clubs.
Although the specific transfer fee remains undisclosed, media reports suggest it is around €100 million ($109 million). If accurate, this would set a new Bundesliga record, surpassing the previous €80 million paid by Bayern for Lucas Hernandez’s transfer from Atletico Madrid in 2019.
“Bayern have signed Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur. The England striker signed a deal until June 30, 2027. He will proudly wear the number nine jersey,” announced the Bavarian club.
Kane, who initially joined Tottenham’s academy at the age of 11, made his senior debut in 2011. While spending the majority of his illustrious career at the north London club, he had loan spells at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City, and Leicester City.
Boasting a remarkable record, Kane netted an incredible 280 goals in over 430 appearances across all competitions for Spurs. He has also represented his country admirably, scoring 58 goals in 84 games, making him England’s all-time leading scorer.
Additionally, Kane currently holds the title of being the second-highest scorer in Premier League history with 213 goals, trailing only 47 goals behind Alan Shearer.
Although Kane was unable to secure silverware for Tottenham during his tenure, he played a crucial role in the team’s journey to the 2019 Champions League final. Furthermore, he has been a runner-up in the League Cup in both 2015 and 2021.
This transfer comes at a pivotal moment for Kane, as he had only one year remaining on his contract with Spurs.
Consequently, the London club faced the risk of losing him on a free transfer next year. The desire for a new challenge reportedly led to speculation about a potential move to Manchester City in 2021.
