Real Madrid’s victory in their 2023-24 La Liga opener against Athletic Bilbao came at a cost as center-back Eder Militao suffered a knee injury. Militao was forced off during the second half of the match, raising concerns about the extent of the damage.
According to Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti, the Brazilian international has sprained his knee. The severity of the injury is yet to be determined, as Militao will undergo further tests to evaluate the damage.
The injury comes as a blow to Real Madrid, who have already lost their number one goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to a serious knee injury. With Courtois set to miss the entire season, the club now faces the additional possibility of new signing Arda Guler requiring a knee operation in the near future.
Despite the setbacks, Real Madrid managed to secure a 2-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao, with Rodrygo and Jude Bellingham finding the back of the net. Ancelotti commended his team’s performance, particularly their intensity in the first half and defensive strength.
Ancelotti also praised goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who stepped in for the injured Courtois and delivered an impressive display between the sticks. However, Lunin may face competition in the form of Kepa Arrizabalaga, who is rumored to be joining Real Madrid on loan from Chelsea.
With Eder Militao, Thibaut Courtois, Dani Ceballos, and Ferland Mendy currently sidelined due to injuries, Real Madrid aims to continue their winning streak when they face Almeria on August 19.
