Inter Miami goalkeeper Nick Marsman has had his contract terminated by the club, less than two months after he expressed doubts about the team’s preparedness for Lionel Messi’s arrival.
The 32-year-old Dutch goalkeeper, who joined Inter Miami from Feyenoord in 2021, faced consequences for his comments made to ESPN Netherlands prior to Messi’s signing.
In June, Marsman openly stated his belief that Inter Miami was not adequately equipped to welcome Messi, one of the greatest players in history.
He pointed out issues with the temporary stadium, lack of security, and unrestricted access to the pitch. Despite his concerns, Marsman also expressed his hope for Messi’s arrival.
Soon after Marsman’s remarks, Messi joined Inter Miami and wasted no time demonstrating his exceptional skills.
In just four appearances, he has already scored seven goals and provided an assist. Messi now shares the joint-fourth position for the highest goal-scorer in Inter Miami’s history and is rapidly approaching Gonzalo Higuain’s record of 29 goals.
It is unclear whether Marsman’s comments directly led to his contract termination, as the club has not officially cited them as the reason.
Additionally, Inter Miami has not published any statement regarding Marsman’s contract termination on their official website.
In the year 2023, Marsman has not featured in any MLS games, losing his position to Drake Callender. His sole participation came in a 1-0 victory over Charleston in the US Open Cup. Additionally, Marsman played in the opening match of the MLS Next Pro for Inter Miami II.
