Inter striker Lautaro Martinez has candidly revealed his disappointment with Romelu Lukaku’s conduct during the tumultuous transfer negotiations that unfolded between Inter and Chelsea.
The two clubs had engaged in prolonged discussions, edging closer to an agreement when Lukaku’s actions took an unexpected turn, leading to a shocking breakdown in the deal.
Despite Lukaku’s initial insistence on his desire to return to San Siro, Inter’s hopes were dashed as the Belgian striker allegedly failed to respond to the club’s calls and was accused of engaging in talks with fierce rivals Juventus.
This unforeseen twist not only derailed the potential reunion between Martinez and Lukaku, who had previously formed a formidable strike force in Europe, but it also left the Argentine striker deeply disheartened.
In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Martinez expressed his feelings on the matter, stating, “I was disappointed, it’s the truth. I also tried to call him in those days of chaos, he never answered me, the same he did with my other teammates. After so many years together, after so many things lived together, I was disappointed. Thankfully, it’s his choice. I wish him the best. But I didn’t expect this attitude.”
As the transfer saga unfolded, Lukaku’s absence from Chelsea’s pre-season squad further fueled speculations about his future.
While Juventus has shown interest, they must first resolve the situation with Dusan Vlahovic before considering a formal bid. Lukaku has reportedly turned down interest from Saudi Arabia, indicating his preference for a European club.
Despite offers from the Middle East, Lukaku’s final decision lies solely with him. With three years remaining on his Chelsea contract, the potential transfer could result in an enormous loss for the Blues, who had paid a staggering £97.5m to acquire him just two years ago. Inter was quoted a significantly lower fee of £40m before the talks collapsed.
