In an official announcement, Germany has appointed Julian Nagelsmann as their new head coach.
The 36-year-old takes over the reins after his recent departure from Bayern Munich.
Nagelsmann replaces Hansi Flick, who was sacked by the national team after a poor run of results.
Flick’s dismissal came after a heavy 4-1 home defeat against Japan in a friendly match on September 10.
With just four wins in 17 matches, Flick’s tenure ended abruptly. Rudi Voller temporarily took charge for Germany’s 2-1 victory over France, but he declined the full-time role.
Sporting director Rudi Voller and DFB president Bernd Neuendorf have unanimously decided to appoint Nagelsmann as the 12th manager of the German national team.
Nagelsmann has signed a contract that extends until July 2024, allowing him ample time to prepare for Euro 2024, which will be hosted by Germany.
Expressing his excitement, Nagelsmann stated,
“Having a European Championship in our own country is something special and happens every few decades. I am fully committed to ensuring that we have a successful tournament. Our recent performance against France was just the beginning. We will form a strong and united group next year.”
Bernd Neuendorf added,
“The upcoming European Championship holds immense importance for football in Germany. We have complete faith that Julian Nagelsmann will inspire the national team and lead us to sporting success. He is an exceptional coach who is highly motivated for this new challenge. Our focus now is on supporting Nagelsmann as we prepare for the tournament next summer.”
Voller also expressed his confidence in the new appointment, stating,
“Julian Nagelsmann was our preferred candidate from the start of the search. He is not only a football expert but has also demonstrated his ability to motivate and inspire teams at a young age. His passion for football is contagious, as seen in his assistant coaches Benjamin Gluck and Sandro Wagner. Nagelsmann’s qualities and personality will play a crucial role in ensuring a memorable European Championship in Germany.”
Despite his departure from Bayern Munich, Nagelsmann has terminated his ongoing contract with the club. This move allows him to take up the role of Germany’s head coach.
Nagelsmann’s impressive track record includes successful stints at RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim.
In fact, he became the youngest-ever coach in Bundesliga history when he took charge of Hoffenheim at the age of 28 in 2015.
Nagelsmann’s first game in charge of Germany will be during their tour of the USA in October.
The team will face the Stars and Stripes in Connecticut on October 14, followed by a match against Mexico in Philadelphia four days later.
