At the age of 31, Phil Jones is returning to his former club, but this time in a managerial capacity. He parted ways with the Red Devils a few months ago when his contract expired, ending his challenging stint that was plagued by recurring injuries over more than a decade.
Back in 2011, Jones joined Manchester United from Blackburn Rovers with high expectations. Sir Alex Ferguson, the legendary manager, once hailed him as one of the potential greats of the club, regardless of the position he played in.
In his own words, Ferguson said, “I think Jones may be one of the best players we have ever had, no matter where we play him.”
Unfortunately, a severe knee injury in 2020 kept Jones on the sidelines for a staggering 70 games. His last appearance for Manchester United dates back to April of last year, and he remained without a club after being released.
During his playing career with the Red Devils, Jones accumulated 229 appearances across various competitions.
He also contributed 16 goals, playing a vital role in helping the team secure victories in the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Europa League.
