Atletico Madrid’s president, Enrique Cerezo, has downplayed the rumors surrounding Joao Felix’s potential departure from the club during the upcoming summer transfer window.
The 23-year-old Portuguese player spent the latter half of last season on loan at Chelsea, making 20 appearances for the Blues and scoring four goals.
However, Chelsea ultimately decided not to secure Felix’s services permanently, and he has since returned to Atletico Madrid for pre-season training. On his return, Felix was seen training separately from the main group, visibly frustrated. Reports also suggest that he engaged in a tense discussion with Atletico’s sporting director, Andrea Berta.
It is believed that Felix’s relationship with Atletico’s head coach, Diego Simeone, has deteriorated, leading to speculations that the talented forward may not be part of the team’s squad in the upcoming season.
Nonetheless, Cerezo has dismissed these rumors and expressed the club’s fondness for Felix. “We are delighted to have a player of Joao Felix’s caliber. Luckily for us, he is an Atletico player. He is beloved by everyone. As of now, unless proven otherwise, he will continue to be an Atletico player for many seasons,” Cerezo affirmed to reporters.
Despite Cerezo’s reassurances, there are ongoing links between Felix and a potential return to the Premier League. Aston Villa and Newcastle United are both reportedly interested in securing his signature this summer.
Furthermore, Manchester United has entered into talks with Atletico Madrid regarding a possible transfer deal for the Portuguese forward during the current market. Manchester United has long been admirers of Felix, with initial links dating back to his time at Benfica. However, Atletico Madrid secured his services in the summer of 2019.
It has been reported that Manchester United explored the option of loaning Felix in January, but the financial aspects of the deal led them to abandon the move.
Since joining Atletico Madrid, Felix has featured in 131 matches across various competitions, scoring 34 goals and providing 18 assists. Prior to his loan spell at Chelsea, he extended his contract with Atletico, committing to the club until June 2027.
Atletico Madrid’s preparations for the 2023-24 season will commence with a friendly match against a K-League XI later this month. Whether Felix will feature in that particular contest remains uncertain.
