Bayern Munich has emerged as a potential suitor for former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, according to reports. The Spanish shot-stopper, who parted ways with United earlier this summer, is currently available on a free transfer. While several clubs have shown interest in him, De Gea has been taking his time to consider his options.
Notably, clubs from the Saudi Pro League, including Al-Nassr, have expressed their desire to acquire the services of the 32-year-old goalkeeper. Al-Nassr suffered a 2-1 defeat against Al Ettifaq in their league opener, with a goalkeeping error contributing to their loss.
However, Al-Nassr, boasting attacking talents like Sadio Mane and Cristiano Ronaldo, seems keen on securing De Gea’s signature and Bayern Munich is prepared to rival the Saudi Arabian club. Sportweez reports that negotiations between Bayern and De Gea have already commenced.
While Bayern’s primary focus this summer has been on acquiring Harry Kane, head coach Thomas Tuchel finds himself short of options in the goalkeeping department. Yann Sommer recently joined Inter Milan, and Manuel Neuer is still recovering from a broken leg sustained in late 2022.
Sven Ulreich stepped in for the German Super Cup clash against RB Leipzig, but Bayern suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of their Bundesliga rivals. Consequently, there is now an increased urgency to find a new first-choice goalkeeper. However, the report suggests that De Gea’s wage demands may be a stumbling block for Bayern.
During his time at Manchester United, De Gea was earning a reported £375,000 per week. He was asked to accept a significant reduction in his wages if he wished to continue playing at Old Trafford. However, De Gea declined the request, leading to his departure from the club.
Bayern had also shown interest in other goalkeepers such as David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga. However, these Spanish compatriots opted to join Arsenal and Real Madrid respectively.
