David de Gea, the former goalkeeper of Manchester United, has engaged in talks with Real Betis regarding a potential move to the La Liga side on a free transfer.
As his contract with Man United expired in June, the Spaniard is currently a free agent and has been searching for a suitable club.
Despite recent rumors linking De Gea with a surprise return to Old Trafford, it is unlikely that the 33-year-old will rejoin Manchester United, even on a short-term basis.
The club had initially offered him a contract renewal before retracting their offer, which may have soured the relationship between the player and the club.
During the previous season, De Gea faced criticism for a series of errors, although he managed to win the Golden Glove in the Premier League, keeping an impressive 17 clean sheets.
Teams in Saudi Arabia and the MLS have also been linked with the experienced goalkeeper, who made 545 appearances for Manchester United.
However, recent reports from El Desmarque suggest that De Gea has held discussions with Real Betis about returning to La Liga.
The Spanish goalkeeper is reportedly excited about the prospect of representing the club, which is currently enjoying a successful 2023-24 campaign.
Real Betis, managed by Manuel Pellegrini, currently holds the sixth position in the La Liga table. The team has advanced to the second round of the Copa del Rey and is on track to secure a place in the knockout stage of the Europa League.
At present, Claudio Bravo and Rui Silva have been sharing goalkeeping duties for Real Betis. Bravo has made nine appearances, while Silva has played eight times.
If De Gea joins the club, he is expected to become the immediate number one choice for the goalkeeper position.
De Gea previously played in La Liga for Atletico Madrid from 2009 to 2011. During his time at Atletico, he made 57 appearances and kept 14 clean sheets in the competition.
If a deal is reached during the international break, De Gea could potentially make his debut for Real Betis in their La Liga match against Las Palmas on November 26.
Real Betis aims to secure their sixth consecutive win in all competitions when they face off against derby rivals Sevilla on Sunday evening.
