According to reports, Manchester United is considering the possibility of signing Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina, with Tottenham Hotspur also showing interest in the talented midfielder.
Amrabat, who is 26 years old, gained significant attention during last year’s World Cup held in Qatar. He played a vital role in helping Morocco secure victories against Spain and Portugal in the knockout stages before his team eventually lost to France in the semifinals.
The midfielder had an eventful season at his club as well, as Fiorentina reached the final of the Europa Conference League. Unfortunately, they were defeated by West Ham United in the showpiece match held in Prague.
During the previous Serie A season, Amrabat made 29 appearances for Fiorentina, with 24 of those being as a starter. However, despite his efforts, the club finished in eighth place and failed to secure a spot in European competitions.
Despite this setback, there is a possibility that Amrabat will have the opportunity to play on the continental stage next season. According to talkSPORT, Manchester United is closely monitoring the player as they seek to strengthen their midfield options.
Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils are said to be keeping a close eye on Amrabat. However, they are prioritizing the acquisitions of Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund before moving on to potential midfield targets.
United is optimistic about completing a deal for Cameroonian goalkeeper Onana from Inter Milan before the end of the week. This move comes as a response to the departure of David De Gea after his lengthy tenure at the club.
Additionally, United is looking to find a replacement for central striker Wout Weghorst, who has returned to his parent club Burnley. Atalanta BC forward Rasmus Hojlund is currently their target to fill this void.
The report suggests that Manchester United may be able to secure Amrabat’s services at a relatively low cost, as his contract with Stadio Artemio Franchi is set to expire in the summer of 2024.
Interest in the midfielder extends beyond Manchester United and Tottenham. Amrabat’s brother has hinted that Tottenham could also be interested in signing him. Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is determined to rebuild his squad and compete for European positions next season, with the recent addition of attacking midfielder James Maddison from Leicester City.
Moreover, Jose Mourinho, who previously managed both Manchester United and Tottenham, has reportedly shown interest in Amrabat. If he becomes the next coach of Paris Saint-Germain, he may attempt to lure Amrabat to Parc des Princes.
Since joining Fiorentina from Hellas Verona in August, Amrabat has appeared in 107 matches, but has only managed to score one goal so far. Throughout his senior career, he has found the net on just six occasions.
