Manchester United‘s head coach, Erik ten Hag, is optimistic about boosting his summer transfer budget by selling Harry Maguire, Fred, and Anthony Elanga. The club has already made their first signing of the window by acquiring Mason Mount from Chelsea for an initial fee of £55m.
Reports suggest that Manchester United has also submitted a second offer for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana. However, if they secure the deal, it would leave limited funds for signing a new striker unless there are player departures.
According to The Guardian, Maguire, Fred, and Elanga are all up for transfer this summer, with their potential sales potentially adding up to £100m to the club’s budget. Maguire, who faced limited game time last season, could command a fee of £40m. Meanwhile, Fred and Elanga are reportedly attracting interest from several clubs, with Manchester United seeking £30m for each player.
Maguire, despite being the club captain, lost his starting role last season and has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford. Clubs such as Newcastle United, West Ham United, and Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly interested in the 30-year-old defender. However, Manchester United may encounter difficulties in offloading him due to his recent salary increase.
Fred, the Brazil international, is also surplus to requirements at the club. With Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes, and now Mason Mount ahead of him in midfield, Fred is likely to seek opportunities elsewhere. Fulham and Roma have been linked with the midfielder, who started only 12 Premier League matches last season but featured in 56 games across all competitions.
Similarly, Anthony Elanga is also available for transfer. The 21-year-old winger struggled to secure playing time in the latter stages of the 2022-23 season. Having started just five Premier League matches, his last appearance in the top flight resulted in a 7-0 defeat against Liverpool in March.
While Manchester United returned to pre-season training, Maguire, Fred, and Elanga were absent at Carrington due to their recent international duties.
With the potential sales of Maguire, Fred, and Elanga, Manchester United aims to bolster their transfer budget and make further signings to strengthen the squad ahead of the new season. Erik ten Hag remains hopeful that these departures will provide the financial boost needed to pursue additional targets and reinforce the team’s ambitions for the upcoming campaign.
