Manchester United are reportedly prepared to activate a 12-month extension in the contract of Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
The club had previously considered selling the right-back, but they now see him as valuable competition for Diogo Dalot.
In 2019, United secured the signature of Crystal Palace right-back Wan-Bissaka with a deal potentially worth £50m.
However, despite contributing two goals and 12 assists from 165 appearances in all competitions, he has yet to fully justify his price-tag.
Under Erik ten Hag, there have been instances where the 25-year-old has played second fiddle to Dalot in their preferred position.
Wan-Bissaka’s bid to regain his spot in the starting lineup has been hampered by a hamstring injury, which has kept him sidelined for five Premier League matches.
Additionally, Wan-Bissaka is aiming to secure a new contract at Old Trafford, with his current deal set to expire in 2024.
While United have the option to extend it until 2025, negotiations for fresh terms have reportedly failed.
Instead, the most likely scenario is an automatic extension of Wan-Bissaka’s contract until 2025.
The Daily Mail suggests that Wan-Bissaka now faces decisions regarding his long-term future.
United, keen to compete in all competitions, are willing to discuss a new contract once the player has recovered from his injury.
Although United has been linked with various right-backs, coach Ten Hag may prioritize strengthening other areas of the team.
Considering the club’s ongoing financial struggles, retaining Wan-Bissaka as competition for Dalot could provide better value for money than signing a new player and potentially demoting Dalot to the substitutes’ bench.
