Manchester United faced a shocking 4-3 defeat to Copenhagen in the Champions League on Wednesday night, leading to an unwanted piece of history for the English club.
Rasmus Hojlund’s two early goals put the Red Devils ahead, but the match took a turn when Marcus Rashford received a straight red card in the 42nd minute.
Copenhagen capitalized on Rashford’s absence, scoring twice before the half-time interval to level the scores.
Despite a Bruno Fernandes penalty putting Man United back in the lead, Lukas Lerager and 17-year-old Roony Bardghji struck late goals to secure the victory for the home side.
This result leaves Manchester United at the bottom of Group A, trailing behind second-placed Copenhagen.
It was also the first time in their history that they had lost a Champions League match in which they led by two goals.
Additionally, the defeat marked their first loss after taking a two-goal lead since September 2014, and the first time they have been beaten in nine of their opening 17 matches of a campaign since 1973-74.
Bardghji’s goal made history as he became the youngest player to score against the Red Devils in the Champions League.
On a positive note, Hojlund made history by becoming the first Man United player to score five goals in his first four Champions League appearances for the club.
Despite his impressive European form, Hojlund is still waiting to score in the Premier League.
Looking ahead, Erik ten Hag’s side will aim to bounce back from the Champions League disappointment when they face Luton Town in the Premier League.
