Manchester United is prepared to offload midfielder Donny van de Beek during the current transfer window, but reports suggest they are not willing to let go of the Netherlands international at any cost.
The 26-year-old midfielder arrived at Old Trafford in 2020 from Ajax amid high expectations. However, he has faced struggles with injuries and finds himself on the outskirts of manager Erik ten Hag’s plans, a surprising situation given his anticipated prominence under the former Eredivisie boss.
Van de Beek’s prospects of regular playtime seem to be fading even further as Manchester United closes in on a deal for Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat.
Despite the dip in Van de Beek’s fortunes, Manchester United has set a hefty €29 million (£25m) transfer fee, considerably higher than the player’s €13m Expected Transfer Value (xTV), as reported by the Daily Mail.
Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano disclosed that Real Sociedad has expressed interest in securing a deal for the Dutch midfielder. The clubs are presently engaged in discussions to finalize the terms of the potential transfer.
But what motivates Manchester United to demand such a substantial transfer fee for Van de Beek?
To begin with, the club signed the midfielder for €39m three years ago, and they are aiming to recoup as much of that initial investment as possible.
Additionally, several clubs are interested in securing the services of Van de Beek, who still has two years left on his current contract.
This widespread interest could potentially lead to a bidding war. However, certain clubs, like Ajax and Real Sociedad, who are among the frontrunners for his signature, may not be able to afford the resources needed for the deal.
Perhaps Erik ten Hag, Van de Beek’s former manager, still believes in the midfielder’s potential to fulfill expectations. Upon his arrival at Manchester United, Van de Beek had an xTV of €51m, which significantly increased to nearly €60m after his initial weeks with the club. It is evident that the Dutch midfielder can be a valuable asset if he can rediscover his top form.
Furthermore, Manchester United might not be compelled to sell Van de Beek, especially with players like Fred and, to a lesser extent, Scott McTominay, who could be potential candidates to be offloaded for significant fees.
