Manchester United may see the return of Mason Greenwood in January as his loan deal with Getafe reportedly includes a break clause that allows the club to recall him.
After the conclusion of his legal case, Greenwood joined the La Liga side for the 2023-24 season.
The young English international has not played a competitive match since January 2022 when he faced allegations posted online by a woman, resulting in his arrest.
However, the case was dropped in February due to key witnesses withdrawing and new evidence coming to light, paving the way for Greenwood’s return to football.
During his time away from the pitch, Greenwood focused on rebuilding his fitness through individual training sessions, which were monitored by Manchester United.
The club had initially planned to reintegrate him into the team after an internal review but faced significant backlash on social media, leading to a reversal of their decision.
Instead of terminating his contract, Manchester United opted to send Greenwood on loan to Getafe, allowing him to resume his career away from the intense scrutiny of English football.
However, there is a possibility that Greenwood’s loan spell may be cut short in January if the situation demands it.
Such break clauses are common practice in loan deals, and while a return to Manchester United remains a possibility, it is unlikely.
Looking ahead, Greenwood’s future beyond 2024 remains uncertain as he is contracted to Manchester United until 2025, with an option for an additional 12 months.
Recent rumors of a permanent move to Saudi Arabia were dismissed by clubs in the Middle East due to concerns about the potential impact on their image.
Other clubs, including Brentford, Roma, AC Milan, and Borussia Dortmund, also declined the opportunity to sign Greenwood.
Having joined Manchester United at the tender age of seven, Greenwood has made 129 appearances for the senior team, registering 35 goals and 12 assists.
However, his recent absence from Getafe’s squad raises questions about when he will make his debut for Pepe Bordalas’s side.
