Sunderland AFC has secured the signing of 23-year-old goalkeeper Nathan Bishop from Manchester United, in a move that has excited fans ahead of the upcoming Championship season.
The promising shot-stopper has put pen to paper on a three-year contract, committing to the Black Cats until 2026.
Bishop’s reputation was highlighted during Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the United States, where he grabbed headlines for a tackle that inadvertently led to a punctured lung for Wrexham’s Paul Mullin during a match against the League Two side.
However, his time with Manchester United came to an end with this transfer to Sunderland, providing the Black Cats with a talented addition to their squad.
In an interview with the Sunderland website, Bishop expressed his enthusiasm for the club’s direction and their commitment to promoting young talent. He is eager to prove himself and earn a spot in the starting XI for the team.

Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman spoke highly of the new acquisition, mentioning that they had been tracking Bishop’s progress for some time and are confident in his potential to bolster their goalkeeping options.
The club’s collaboration with Manchester United for the transfer was a success, and they are delighted to have secured the player before the start of the season.
Nathan Bishop initially joined Manchester United from Southend United in 2020 but didn’t get the chance to make a competitive appearance for the senior team.
However, he gained valuable experience during the 2021-22 season on loan at Mansfield Town in League Two, recording an impressive 16 clean sheets from 46 appearances.
As the Championship season approaches, all eyes will be on Bishop as he competes with Anthony Patterson for the starting position between the posts.
Sunderland’s first game of the season is against newly-promoted Ipswich Town, where fans hope to witness Bishop’s debut performance under the guidance of manager Tony Mowbray.
