Bayern Munich is reportedly open to considering suitable offers for Leon Goretzka, the midfielder who has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer.
Goretzka, a key player in the Germany national team, has formed a formidable partnership with Joshua Kimmich in Bayern’s midfield for the past few years. However, he faced criticism last season due to what some perceived as a decline in his performances.
While he managed to contribute six goals and six assists from 40 matches in all competitions, his playing time was limited, starting in only 22 Bundesliga matches. The increased competition for minutes in the midfield, with the arrival of Konrad Laimer and the expected more prominent role for Ryan Gravenberch, may have further put his regular starting position at risk.
To add to the uncertainty, Marcel Sabitzer has returned from his loan spell at Manchester United, seeking to rejuvenate his career at Bayern, posing a challenge to Goretzka’s place in the team.
Despite having three years left on his current contract, Sky Germany reports that Bayern would not hesitate to let him go if a suitable offer is received this summer. The transfer fee for Goretzka is speculated to be around €40m (£34.4m), although Bayern might hold out for a higher amount closer to €50m (£42.9m).
Thomas Tuchel, the Bayern Munich coach, reportedly plans to partner Kimmich with Laimer in midfield for the upcoming 2023-24 season, possibly utilizing Raphael Guerreiro in an inverted role as well. Additionally, after missing out on signing Declan Rice, Tuchel is looking to bring in another midfielder to bolster the squad, adding to Goretzka’s uncertainty about his starting position.
Despite Manchester United already investing £55m in Mason Mount, they are said to be closely monitoring the situation with Goretzka and might still be interested in acquiring the talented midfielder.
However, Goretzka himself is content with life in Munich and currently not actively seeking a move away. Nevertheless, his stance could change if he does not receive assurances regarding his playing time.
The 28-year-old player made a name for himself at Schalke 04 before joining Bayern on a free transfer in 2018, and he has since been a vital contributor, amassing 34 goals and 35 assists in 179 appearances for the German champions.
Having secured his fifth consecutive Bundesliga title with Bayern last season and achieving success in other competitions, Goretzka’s experience and abilities make him an attractive prospect for many top clubs, including Manchester United.
The Red Devils are reportedly still looking to add another midfielder to their ranks this summer, especially with the potential departures of Fred, Scott McTominay, and Donny van de Beek. However, their immediate focus appears to be on finalizing a deal for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana before turning their attention to securing a high-profile striker.
The transfer window is open, and with potential moves and deals still in flux, Goretzka’s future remains a topic of keen interest for both Bayern Munich and Manchester United supporters.
